Treatment

a)
Historical perspective
Before the last
half century, physical and mental rest, nutritional build up and
various forms of lung collapse were used to treat TB. Specific chemotherapy
started about 50 years ago by introduction of streptomycin. Previously
treatment programmes consisting of streptomycin, para-amino salicylic
acid and isoniazid lasted for 18 months to 2 years. Because of the
long duration of treatment, patients often defaulted during treatment.
