I. Food Biotechnology Laboratory

This Laboratory was first established in 1993 by Dr. Steven Feng Chen when he joined the University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor.  The Laboratory is mainly supported by University Research Grants and External Research Grants.  Major grants awarded include RGC 94/95, RGC 95/96, RGC 97/98, RGC 02/03, RGC 03/04, ISF 1997 and ITF 2000, totaling more than 5 million HK dollars. Additional funding (more than 2 million HK dollars) from CRCG grants, URC grants, teaching grants and equipment grants has been received. The Laboratory is very well equipped with modern facilities, such as 10 fermentors (Bioengineering, Switzerland) ranging from 2.4-L to 30-L, 3 HPLC systems (Beckman and Waters), 1 GC system (HP), 1 GC-MS system (HP),1 counter-current chromatographic system, 1 PCR machine, 1 gene pulser (BIO-RAD), 1 gel doc and many others.

The laboratory is led by Dr. Steven Feng Chen. Dr. Chen is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journals Process Biochemistry (Elsevier) and Journal of Applied Phycology (Kluwer). Dr. Chen is also a Director of Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, Council member of Asia-Pacific Society for Applied phycology, and Guest (or Consultant) Professor of several Universities. Dr. Chen is a Recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Young Researcher Award of The University of Hong Kong (2002-2003). Dr. Chen was Chairman of Organizing Committee of the 4th Asia-Pacific Conference on Algal Biotechnology.
