FLOWERS

The flower of a plant is a specialised reproductive structure which is characteristic of the highest form of plants the Angiosperms. A typical flower can be divided into 4 parts as follows;
1) the SEPALS which together form the CALYX. The sepals originally form the cover of the flower bud before it opens and are often green and leaf like.
2) the PETALS which together form the COROLLA. The petals are often brightly coloured and the most visible part of the flower.
3) the male part of the flower or STAMEN which contains the ANTHER where the pollen is produced.
4) the female part of the flower or CARPEL which contains an OVARY where the seed will develop after fertilization, and the STIGMA which receives the pollen and is joined to the ovary by the STYLE.
