Status of mycology research/activities in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is described as a biodiversity hot spot and believed to have a rich fungal flora. Apart from a few scattered studies, there is no systematic study conducted on the fungal flora of Sri Lanka.  Information is available on some major pathogenic fungi in plants, seed-borne fungi, fungi pathogenic on fruits, certain litter decomposing fungi, fungi infecting insects etc.  Other Sri Lankan flora is being documented. Fifteen volumes of the Revised Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon that describes the angiosperm flora have been published. Checklists of ferns, bryophytes are available. Small collections of fungi are available at the National Herbarium, National Botanic Gardens, Department of Botany, University of Peradeniya, Department of Microbiology, University of Kelaniya.
