News and Activities

J Yang delivered a keynote/plenary lecture entitled “Recent Developments in Liquefaction Research” at the 10th National Conference on Soil Dynamics on November 2-4, 2018 in Nanjing, China. The conference was well attended by over 800 participants across the nation.  Thanks to the organizing committee (Prof. GX Chen) for the kind invitation.

J Yang delivered a keynote/plenary lecture entitled “On critical state friction angle of granular Soil” at the 28th National Symposium on Geotechnical Testing on November 9-11, 2018 in Zhengzhou, China. The conference was well attended by over 400 participants across the nation.  Thanks to the organizing committee (Prof. Z Xiao and Prof. ZY Cai) for the kind invitation.

J Yang delivered an invited plenary talk entitled “Vertical site response to earthquake loading: a missing issue?” at the 7th Technical Conference in Eastern Asia on Geo-Natural Disasters on May 12-14, 2018 in Chengdu, China. J Yang delivered a keynote lecture at the 3rd International Conference on Ground Improvement and Ground Control on October 27-29, 2017 in Hangzhou. His lecture was entitled “A new method for evaluation of performance of hydraulic sand fills”. Thanks to the organizing committee (Prof. YQ Cai) for the kind invitation.

J Yang was one of the keynote speakers at the joint international conferences ISCOG2017 & GeGe2017 in Zhejiang University, Hangzhou on July 5-7, 2017. J Yang was one of the keynote speakers at the International Workshop on New Trends in  Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering held in Hohai University, Nanjing on June 18, 2017. His talk was entitled “Liquefaction behavior of sand under non-symmetrical cyclic loading”. Thanks to Prof. YF Gao for the kind invitation.

J Yang was one of the theme speakers at the International Geotechnics Symposium on Natural Disasters in Hong Kong on December 14-17, 2016. His talk was entitled “Static liquefaction and flow failure of sand: Several new findings”.

J Yang was one of the invited speakers at the International Workshop on Wave Propagation and Soil Stiffness: Particle-Continuum Duality, which was held in the University of Bristol on March 20-21, 2014. His talk was entitled “Shear stiffness of granular material at small strains: does it depend on grain size?”

J Yang was one of the invited speakers at the 3rd International Workshop on Holistic Simulation of Geotechnical Installation Processes, which was held at the Institute of Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on March 6-7, 2014. His talk was entitled “Liquefaction behavior of sand under non-symmetrical cyclic loading conditions.”

J Yang delivered an invited keynote lecture entitled “Liquefaction behavior of sand: some recent findings” at the 16th Taiwan-Japan Joint Student Seminar on Earthquake Engineering held at the National Central University, Taiwan on March 10-11, 2014.

J Yang delivered an invited keynote lecture entitled “Dynamic soil-structure interaction: the role of soil nonlinearity” at the 6th International Symposium on Environmental Vibration held at Tongji University, Shanghai on November 8-10, 2013.

J Yang delivered an invited keynote lecture entitled “Liquefaction behavior of saturated sand under cyclic loading: new findings and interpretations” at the International Symposium on Coastal and Offshore Geotechnics in Hangzhou, China on November 17-18, 2012.

J. Yang was invited by ICE Hong Kong Association and ASCE Hong Kong Section to deliver a seminar entitled “Is our seismic code adequate? - A geotechnical engineering perspective” on September 27, 2011. The seminar was well attended by more than 120 practitioners and researchers.

J. Yang gave an invited talk entitled “New developments and technologies for deep foundations for tall Buildings and high rise structures” at Tall Buildings Asia 2011 conference held in Hong Kong on July 18, 2011.

J Yang presented an invited panel discussion entitled “On seismic landslide hazard assessment” at the ATC3 Geotechnology for Natural Hazard session at the 14th Asian Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering held in Hong Kong on May 23-27, 2011.

J Yang visited the Department of Geotechnical Engineering of Tongji University in July 2013 under the MOE Key Laboratory Visiting Professorship, and gave a seminar entitled “Recent advances in cyclic loading behavior and liquefaction of sand”.

J Yang visited Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University in July-August 2012 and gave invited talks on earthquake ground response analysis.

Congratulations! Ho Cheuk Yin, a project student under the supervision of J Yang, received the Best Final-Year Project Award from ASCE Hong Kong Section in November 2013. He was also selected by HKIE Geotechnical Division as the First Runner-up of the AECOM Prize for Best Final-Year Geotechnical Project in February 2014.

Congratulations! Chen Wen, a project student under the supervision of J Yang, received the Best Paper Award (Geotechnical Division) in the Papers Competition 2011 organized by ICE Hong Kong Association. Another project student under the supervision of J Yang, Li Yongwei (now attending DPhil program at Oxford University), received a Merit Award in this competition.

Congratulations! Eric Sze was selected by HKIE Geotechnical Division as the Winner of the Fugro Prize in March 2012 for his paper on cyclic strength of saturated sand, an outgrowth of his PhD work.

Congratulations! Chen Wen, was selected by HKIE Geotechnical Division as the Winner of the AECOM Prize for Best Final-Year Geotechnical Project in March 2012. His project was on cyclic deformation of sand under cyclic loading.

Congratulations! Li Yongwei was selected by HKIE Geotechnical Division as the First Runner-up of the AECOM Prize in March 2012. His project was on uplift capacity of pile foundations.

Chen Wen received the Best Final-Year Project Award 2010-2011 from ASCE Hong Kong Section in November 2011. He also received the Civil Engineering Project Prize from the Department of Civil Engineering, HKU in December 2011.

Xin Liu attended Geo-Congress 2014 of ASCE Geo-Institute held in Atlanta, USA on February 23-26, 2014, and presented a paper entitled “Laboratory measurement of small-strain shear modulus of volcanic soil”. 

X.D. Luo attended the 5th International Young Geotechnical Engineers’ Conference in Paris, France on August 31-September 1, 2013, and presented a paper entitled “Effect of fines on shear behavior of sand: A DEM analysis”.

J. Yang visited the Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University from July 10 to 30, 2010. The visit was kindly hosted by Dr GH Wang and Prof. T. Kamai.

J. Yang was appointed as Guest Professor by the East China Jiao-tong University. The certificate of appointment was presented to him by the university’s president on December 28, 2009.

J. Yang visited Oxford University from July to August, 2009. The visit was kindly hosted by Prof. G Houlsby, Head of Department of Engineering Science.

Xiaoqiang Gu (PhD student) attended the 14th European Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Ohrid, Macedonia in August 2010, and presented a paper entitled “Dynamic shear modulus of dry sand: effect of test method”.

Eric Sze (PhD student) attended the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics in San Diego, California in May 2010, and presented a paper entitled “Failure of saturated sand in non-symmetrical cyclic loading”.

Eric Sze was shortlisted for the 2009 HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers for the paper “Initial static shear effect on cyclic liquefaction behavior of sand” co-authored with J Yang.

Leung Kin Kei, a project student under the supervision of J Yang, received the Best Final-Year Geotechnical Project Award 2009-2010 from HKIE Geotechnical Division. The project was entitled “Nonlinear analysis of piled-raft foundation”.

Leung Kin Kei received the Best Paper Award (Geotechnical Division) in the Papers Competition 2009 organized by ICE Hong Kong Association.

Eric Sze attended the 17th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Alexander, Egypt in October 2009, and presented a paper entitled “Effect of initial static shear on cyclic behavior of sand”.

Heung Man Kuen, Karen, a project student under the supervision of J Yang, received the Best Final-Year Geotechnical Project Award 2007-2008 from HKIE Geotechnical Division. The project was entitled “Overburden and initial static shear correction factors in liquefaction analysis”.
