- arr. for pipa & Western chamber ensemble (1992), 2:15

The original piece was gradually formulated as a jinghu-solo work by many generations of Peking-opera musicians who were using excerpts from 'kunqu' as the starting material of their formulation. The piece was then re-arranged for pipa solo to accompany certain scenes in Peking operas. For example, one had to change the moody sounds of the original version to accentuated ones in the sword-fighting scene of the opera 'Farewell to My Concubine'. Eventually, the rhythmic, forceful mood was replaced by ones that are graceful and sad. The piece's formal structure is compact and well organized.

The recording is available on the CD "Lady Mulan Pipa Concerto". HK: Kira Productions, 1993. [KRD-001A]
