2005 Annual Report

During the 2004, ICCDS organized numerous distinguish events and the Director of the ICCDS and its key members were invited as keynote speaker in many national/international high profile conference/convention/expo (see below).

5-7 December, 2004:
ICCDS and Dept of Geography jointly held a high profile visiting delegation of Chinese Association of Geographers, led by Prof. Lu Dadao, President of the Association and Academician of Chinese Academy of Science. A group of 12 distinguished scholars from the Association visited HKU and HK and conduct academic exchange programs, one of which is the high ranking public geographical forum held on 6th Dec (see below).

6 December, 2004:
ICCDS and Dept of Geography jointly held a Geographical Public Public Forum of on China's Regional Development in the State 11th Five-Year Plan, in which Prof. Lu Dadao, President of Chinese Association of Geographers and Academician of Chinese Academy of Science and many distinguished scholars from both Mainland China and HK delivered key-note speeches.

Summer 2004:
ICCDS and I were invited by Beijing Municipal Government to participate in the planning and preparation the high profile 8th Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium & Olympic Market Promotion Conference, which was held in HK 1-3 Sept 2004.

2 September, 2004:
Invited by both Beijing and Hong Kong Government as one of keynote speakers and distinguish guests the 8th Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium & Olympic Market Promotion Conference held in HK, in which Dr. Zhao, Director of ICCDS, delivered a keynote speech along with Beijing Vice-Mayor, HK former Financial Secretary, and top HK Bankers and regulators.

Summer 2004:
Invited by Guanghua School of Economic Management of Beijing University as one of two key partners in the project on Evaluation and Ranking of China's Best Cities for Business. The first result will be published nationwide in Dec 2004.

12 August, 2004:
Dr. Zhao, Dirctor of ICCDS, was invited by CCTV (China's central TV) and China's Higher Education Commission as a special guest and keynote in the National Televised Inter-University Debates on China's future financial center development. The debate was televised in many channels of CCTV.

30 June-2 July, 2004:
Dr. Zhao, Dirctor of ICCDS, was invited by China Central Government as one of keynote speakers and distinguish guests in China's first "International Service Industries Convention and Expo", which held in Great People Hall and Chinese Vice-Premier, Director of State Development and Reform Commission, Bill Gate, and China and global top bankers and regulators etc attended the meeting.

3-6 June, 2004:
A group of students and professors from State University of New York at Albany visited ICCDS and Dept of Geography, HKU. ICCDS organized a field excursion to Shenzhen and Pearl River Delta region visiting local governments, IT development zone and firms, industrial district and factories, and urban and real estate development sites etc.

17-20 May, 2004:
ICCDS co-held an high profile "International Conference on China - Lijiang and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Region Glacier, Tourism and Economic Sustainable Development", The Conference was co-organized by Lijiang City Government, Chinese Academy of Science, and ICCDS of HKU. Dr. David Zhang, Program Head, and Dr. Simon Zhao, Director of ICCDS, delivered keynote speeches in the Conference, which was instantly televised on local and provincial TV shows and were widely publicized in China's major national and provincial media.

29 April, 2004:
ICCDS co-held an high profile "Beijing-Hong Kong Intercourse Conference on China's Financial Centres and Financial Industries Development" in Beijing. The Conference was co-organized by Beijing Municipal Government, Institute of Urban Development and Environment, Chinese Academy of Social Science, and ICCDS of HKU. The Director of ICCDS, Dr. Simon Zhao, delivered a keynote speech in the Conference, which was widely publicized in China's major national media.

Mid 2003-May 2004:
Chaired by Dr. George Lin, Associated Director of ICCDS, ICCDS has completed a consultancy study on "Development Strategy of Su Zhou's Manufacturing and Services Industries, for Su Zhou's city government.

14 June, 2003:
- ICCDS will hold the Official Opening Inauguration and Public Forum of International Centre for China Development Studies

Forthcoming (2004 Summer):
- ICCDS will co-organize an International Forum of "The Sixteenth CPC National Congress and the Development of West China" held in Urumqi City, Xinjiang with the distinguished and powerful organizations of PRC - the Office of State Council for West China's Development, the Development and Research Centre of State Council, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

-The forum is intended to be a biennial event that gathers experts and officials worldwide for discussion and exchange of their research findings for the development issues in West China.

28-29 June, 2003:
- ICCDS will co-organize the "Nankai International Business Forum" with Nankai University in Tianjin.

23-26 June, 2003:
- ICCDS will co-organize the "Impacts Of Economic Development and Environmental Change on Regional Sustainability and Policy Response in Yunnan Lijiang Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Region" workshop with the Institute of Geographical Science and Natural Resources Research and the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Gardens of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment for an International Conference in Kunming

11-13 June, 2003:
- ICCDS will co-organize the "International Conference on Globalization, the State, and Urban Transformation in China" with Centre for China Urban and Regional Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University and Working Group on Urban Transformation in China and Reorganization of the State in an Era of Globalization, Urban China Research Network of State University of New York at Albany

March to July, 2003:
- ICCDS is conducting a research project focusing on Urban Managerial and Entrepreneurship for Chengdu City Government

January to February, 2003:
- ICCDS conducted the Chongqing Urban and Strategic Planning Consultancy Project for Shui On Group and Chongqing Municipal Government

27-28 June, 2002:
- ICCDS co-organized and co-sponsored the Chinese Economists Society (USA) for the International Conference 'The Integration of the Greater Chinese Economies: Causes, Consequences, and Implications'. It was held in HKUST and the participants came from all over the world, but were mainly from USA, UK, and Mainland China.
