List of questions to be prepared for lecture on

Social Problem and Human Needs

1. What are the various explanations for social problems?
2. What are the differences and similarities between an individual problem and a social problem?
3. What is the difference between "wants" and "needs"?
4. What are the different types of needs? What do we meant by "felt" need, "expressed" need, "normative" need, and "comparative need"?
5. Leaders of the Chinese Government used to say that the basic human right of Chinese is to be well fed. Whose theory of human needs bears similarity to this argument, i.e. people' lower level of needs have to be satisfied first before they would "need" a higher level of needs?

1. for books, try the library Dragon system and locate the books with subject or title with the keyword you want, e.g. "need". The quickest way to find out if a book contains what you want, go to the index directly and find the relevant pages containing the keywords.
2. For journals, try to use CD ROM search with similar keywords.
3. For internet, simply try to search with keywords.
4. Reference list of the books, journals, or internet articles that you have already located are also very useful.
