Inter-hall Energy Saving Competition

http://goo.gl/i0Xy3

http://www.sustainability.hku.hk/get-involved/inter-hall-energy-saving-competition

HKU Inter-hall Energy Saving Competition has launched on 1/2/2012!
It is an initiative developed and jointly organized by Greenwoods, HKUSU and the
HKU Sustainability Office. We aim to promote the importance of energy saving and
encourage hall residents to incorporate energy-saving ideas into their daily lives.

There are 13 HKU halls participating in the competition, involving about 4000 hall
residents. 3 halls getting the least energy consumption per capita will win the
competition.

Reducing energy consumption is not a difficult task. Every one of us can reduce
energy consumption with a little change in our habits.
If you use electric fan instead of air-conditioner for a whole day, you will save
15.9kWh and HKD$21.
So “Take Action。Save Energy” by changing your habits now!
The competition will last from now until the end of March 2012.

Also, we invite you to complete our online survey about your energy consumption:

Please go to the following website for more information:

Reply from The Examinations Unit

Regarding to our email sent on May 23 suggesting some possible ways to reduce paper wastage in examinations, the Academic Development and Quality Assurance replied to us on July 7. Below is their reply. You may have a look and feel free to comments.

Thank you for your email of May 23, 2011 suggesting possible ways to reduce paper wastage in examinations.

It has already been our practice to provide answer books with different number of pages for examiners to choose from and we will look into your suggestion of doing away the rough work side of the answer books. While we certainly support environmental protection, it is also important for us to ensure the fair and smooth conduct of the examinations. We have, for example, received student complaints in the past that they ran out of papers all at the same time near the end of the examination but the invigilators were unable to give them the supplementary pages in time, thus adversely affecting their performance. We have also encountered situations where students, especially non-HK students, brought in their own rough papers and violated the examination regulations as they thought that no rough papers would be provided. These are the issues which we would be looking further into when we further explore your suggestions.

As for the disposal of the used answer books, we have checked with a number of departments on their practice. You would be pleased to know that for the departments we contacted, they all discard the answer books as confidential recycling papers; and at least in one department, unused pages are reused.

Anyway, as I have mentioned earlier, we will look into your suggestions. In the meantime, if you have any further suggestions/comments, please feel free to let me know.

Re: Suggestions on Reducing Paper Wastage in Exams

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are Greenwoods, HKUSU, the oldest green organization in HKU. We aim to promote green concepts to every corner in the campus via peaceful means. And we will give suggestions to the corresponding departments when we discover problems related to environmental protection in the campus.

Echoing to the University's direction to develop a sustainable environment and as students who sit exams, we have two suggestions on how to make the best use of paper in exams.

1. Cut the 'Rough Work' left side; Allow students to write answers on both sides; Use a separate 'Rough Work Sheet'

Now, on every page of the exam answer booklet, the left side is for 'Rough Work' and answers could only be written on the right side. But in fact, students do not use the 'Rough Work' space so frequently, or they do not need so many 'Rough Work' pages.

So, we suggest the Examinations Unit to prepare one separate 'Rough Work Sheet' for students to write their rough work, which we think is sufficient. Then both sides of each page of the answer booklet could be used to write answers. This is also the long-term practice of HKCEE and HKALE. With the implementation of this improvement, almost half of the paper could be saved.

2. Set the number of pages in the answer booklet according to how many students really need

For most students, they only need 1/4 to 1/2 of the pages provided in the answer booklet to finish his/her answering. A considerable number of pages would then be unused.

So, we suggest for each exam, the number of pages provided in the answer booklet should only be slightly higher than the average demand. It is more appropriate to provide extra papers for students who write a lot only upon their request during the exam. Given the huge amount of answer booklets used each semester, the above improvement can also save a significant amount of paper.

Also, we would like to ask about how the used answer booklets and the unused pages will be treated? Recycled for used answer booklets? Reused then recycled for unused pages? It would be a great green achievement for the Examinations Unit if both questions could be answered 'yes' either now, or in the future.

It is hoped that the above suggestions could be taken into account in the future exam arrangement. Let's join hands to make the campus greener!

Wishes,

Greenwoods, HKUSU

Green Tips

Every Little Helps

Again another semester has come to the end, with a long summer holiday adhering to come. All of us can “tappy” in our study, but we have to continue “striking hard” to be green. Here are some green tips for the summer holiday:

1. Reuse and Recycle Paper

Finally it comes to the end of the semester, every one of us can’t wait to throw away all the notes and readings, clear the desk and embrace the summer holiday. Hold on! When you dispose the papers, remember to check whether they ha
ve been fully used or not. If yes, recycle them. If no, reuse them.

2. Only use air-conditioning when  necessary
It is inevitable to use air-conditioning in the melting summer. However, when enjoying the coolness, remember not to set the temperature too low. 25
would be the perfect level, neither too hot nor too cold. It can also ease the pressure of the environment. When you leave the room, see if the air-conditioner has been switched off. If the day is cool and windy, to open the window and kiss the wind would be much more comfortable than staying in a door-closed-air-conditioned room!

3. Reuse and Recycle
For those living in hall, when you quit the hall and clear the stuff in your room, remember to check ahead if those things can be reused or recycled before regarding them as rubbish!

Every Little Helps! Wish you all have a colorful (with Green in) summer holiday!

Hong Kong Shark Foundation

Jonathan has cut his nose off to support "Nose-Off". Copy and paste this link: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Hong-Kong-Shark-Foundation/192958557387074 to join him. And in less than minutes, we can take a stand against the senseless slaughtering of tens of millions of sharks a year.

You could help save several species of sharks from facing extinction.

Healthy oceans need healthy shark populations. As apex predators, sharks play a vital role in regulating marine ecosystems. Yet, despite their undeniable importance, tens of millions of sharks every year are killed for their fins – primarily to serve an unsustainable demand for sharks fin soup.

Hong Kong Shark Foundation, a voluntary group dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of sharks in the marine ecosystem and to reducing consumption of shark products, has garnered immense support from countless parties already. Celebrities, such as Chet Lam (林一峰) etc. and countless environmental groups, influential Hong Kong bloggers and university student societies are supporting this cause and now – we need your help.

Just as the human face is designed to have a nose, so are sharks designed to have fins! Take a stand now and protect the delicate balance of marine life as we know it.
